Turkey's First Ph.D. Student with Autism, Music Genius Buğra Çankır

Buğra Çankır, who was born with autism in 1994, started reading before he could speak at the age of 3.5, although he had difficulties in terms of social and communication skills.

 

In 2004, it was documented that he had the best musical ear in the world, in a sense, by getting the full and highest score among 664 people who had passed the "perfect pitch" test conducted over the internet by the University of California. Due to this feature, which can be summarized as "identifying all the sounds in nature by distinguishing them according to their note frequencies", it was included in the literature as a Musical Savant (genius) by the Wisconsin Medical Society in 2007. Buğra Çankır, who was subjected to formal music education despite his learning difficulties due to autism, completed the English Royal Family Music Schools pre-graduate program externally and received the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, Piano Grade 8 certificate in 2011 in the field of piano.

 

He participated in the Master Class programs of Misha Dačić, Julian Gorus, Ilya Itin, Gülsin Onay, Peter Katin and İbrahim Yazıcı. Clarinetist lecturer Dr. He studied piano accompaniment with Şehiraz Gündüz. She took advanced piano and accompaniment training from Pianist Swetlana Meermann-Muret and Reto Reichenbach at Crescendo Summer Institute in Hungary.

 

It has made it a mission to take part in national and international events to increase the awareness of the society about autism and to transform the perspective on autism by showing that individuals with autism can "learn" by leading individuals with autism in a sense. He started his master's degree at Afyon Kocatepe University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Music. He presented a paper on "Expectations of Families with Children with Autism from Professional Music Education" at the 2019 ITU International Music and Sciences Symposium. He studied at Florence L. Cherubini Conservatory in Italy for 6 months as part of the Erasmus Internship Program in the 2019 - 2020 academic year. He presented a paper on "Describing the Problems of Families with Musically Talented Autistic Children" at the 2nd International August 30 Scientific Research Symposium.
